Wow, Bettina, that was really something. So sad and and tragic that he suffered so horribly from emotional and mental health issues as a child/ teenager.

That was great.

I love it when Merrill talks about Lou - no book to sell, no hidden agenda - just honest memories.

I wish she was inducting him instead of Patti Smith - for me she was the best speaker at his Apollo memorial.

Maybe Lou's parents weren't homophobic, but no middle class Jewish family from Long Island brags about their son being a "fucking faggot junkie", especially in the 1950's/ 60's.

Understanding is that Lou started to invent and fabricate stories about his past to journalists and all. Andy's bad advise not to tell them the truth effectuated was in open conflict with his own love for his own family. Another angel is that Lou was not much involved with people at Warhol's factory: he watched "Flesh" and the idea for WOTWS was there. He never met Joe Dallessandro. My point is that the truth is broad and hard to see, and sometimes a fake, so nothing you brag about. But it's fine to hear it now from his sisters point of view.

Truth can be elusive, that's for sure. Lou isn't here to describe what happened to him as a teenager, and didn't want to discuss it while he was a alive so anything anyone says, including his sister, should be taken with a grain of salt. A case in point is her mentioning that Lou was "routinely beaten" by "gangs" in high school. Really??...So nobody did anything? his parents ? the school? Charges weren't filed with the police?……..at the very least why wasn't he transfer to another school? …….Probably because it didn't happen.

Yes it was all a lie, he was (possible) never beaten up, and the electro chock therapy was possible more electro stimulation, and the family was not alarm by his sexuality at all, no no, they were tolerant and caring to dead etc etc, but who cares? What cares for me is Lou Reed and his music, that's what matter for me, and I love to play his records. They are classical rock'n roll from a period when that kind of music played an important role, not like to day when rock is degenerated to mainstream. We need a new underground a new avant-garde that is potent like it was when Lou Reed and Velvet Underground hit it.
